Taylor likes to play. From youth sports to facilities for the whole family, recreational opportunities are abundant in and around the city. Taylor has several programs for youth to take part in throughout the school year.

In the fall, Soccer allows children in grades K-6 to compete on Saturdays. Registration usually begins in mid-August with the season commencing in September. For more information, contact the Taylor YMCA at (512) 365-9622.

Pop Warner football also is available in the fall. Registration begins Saturdays in July. The season begins in early September. The sport is for ages 5-12 with flag football for young players and tackle football for older kids. For more information, contact Shorty Mitchell at (512) 365-1318.

The YMCA offers youth basketball for students in grades K-6. Registration begins in late November and the season begins in January. Children are grouped according to age and ability. For more information, contact the Taylor YMCA at (512) 365-9622.

Spring brings baseball season, with Taylor Little League for boys ages 5-12 and girls ages 5-18. There also is a special free Challenger League for handicapped players. Pony Baseball offers advanced leagues for boys ages 13-18, but expanded its programs in 2008 to include leagues for younger players as well. Pony is for ages 13-14, Colt for ages 15-18, but this year the league offered a 4 and under division as well as T-ball, coach pitch, minor and major divisions. The Taylor Family YMCA opened its fitness and recreation center in 2006. The center offers fitness equipment, a group exercise room, child watch area and nursery and a teen center. It is open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The YMCA offers a variety of programs for children of all ages. Sports leagues include basketball, soccer, flag football and cheer. Sports programs include Itty Bitty Sports for small children, Kid Fit and karate. There also are a number of sports clinics and camps.

The YMCA also offers an extensive aquatics program, managing the community pools in Murphy and Robinson parks and teaching swimming lessons throughout the summer. For information about swim lessons, contact the Murphy Park Aquatic Center at (512) 352-3958.

The YMCA offers day camp during the summer and an after-school program at the elementary school campuses during the school year.

Membership fees and program fees are required to participate in YMCA programs, but the Taylor Family YMCA offers a scholarship program for people who need assistance.
